Help Your Child Become a Better Reader

Reading is a skill all students will have to develop and master at some point during their academic career. Help your child master it early on with these tips.

Read Together

Reading with your child is a great way to encourage them to develop healthy reading habits. Even if your child is too young to read, they can still benefit from listening to you read to them. Introducing them to reading concepts early on can make them more comfortable with reading and can give them a head start on the subject.

Create a Reading Nook

Giving your child a comfortable place to read at home can help encourage them to do it more often. To help them develop their oral reading skills, join them in their reading nook and have them read to you. If they struggle with any part of their reading, have them stop and repeat the word causing them issues. Once they've mastered the word, have them go back and reread the entire sentence. This will help with their reading comprehension.

Listen to Books

Students who listen to what they're reading as they follow along silently can develop better oral reading skills. Being able to hear the correct pronunciation of words and fluent reading can help them develop their own skills. If you don't have a recorded copy of their reading material, take turns reading parts out loud as the other follows along silently.
